Proof, From Those Who Know!

I had just hired on at $16 an hour with no benefits. By the time I worked my first day, the union was newly in place and I was being paid $20 an hour – WITH benefits!
I’m a really happy lady! |

I’ve been a drywaller for 42 years. It’s sad to see all these young people working hard for $26 an hour and they get no benefits or pension. When the union talked to us about ‘organizing’ our employer, some of my co-workers were scared because they’d heard stories about how non-union companies treat workers when they’re trying to organize. But in the end, it was totally worth it. Most people on the job got a little over a 10% increase in wages, but they also got benefits and a good pension plan. It was totally worth it…no doubt. If you’re thinking about calling in the union and you’re afraid for your job, go ahead a call them. You don’t have to be afraid.

I’ve worked lots of non-union jobs. Union wages and benefits are always better, and they have rules that protect us from unfair treatment. When we unionized, my basic wage 10% was higher, and now I also have a benefit plan and a pension. So I feel a whole lot more secure and stable. When Local 1325 organized our employer, they had all their ducks lined up. They followed the legal procedure down to the letter, and they moved really fast. That protected us. We really appreciated it when they kept us in touch with what was happening.
